“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe…” Hebrews 12:28

Our salvation. Our rescue from eternal separation from God. Our unshakable hope.

I am so thankful, Lord, for the beautiful gift of salvation that you have granted to me. Remind me of this Truth when I get distracted. Enlighten me with this Truth when I get confused. Comfort me as I cling to this Truth. Amen.

“Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves…”
Mark 6:41 (Jesus’ miracle of feeding the 5000.)

It is not unusual for a person to follow Jesus’ example of taking a moment before enjoying their meal to give thanks to God, whether they call it “a moment of silence,” or “saying grace,” or “bless this mess”, like my husband’s family use to say. And on this special day of Thanksgiving, many family’s across our nation will follow that tradition even though they may not any other day of the year.

It is Biblical to thank God before eating…Jesus showed us by His example. But it is fitting to give thanks with a heart that really means what we say, not just because it is tradition or because it is expected but because we truly are grateful. It should be a natural response to our recognition of God’s provision for our strength and God’s provision for our enjoyment. Let’s try to align our hearts with each word of thanks we express today!

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.”
Psalm 107:1

We thank God, breathlessly, for safety on the road as our brakes screech us to a halt on 23. Under our breath we thank God we still have a job as the holidays approach and the kid’s wish list grows longer. We thank God for our friends, and sometimes we thank him for our family though the holiday reunion can sometimes make us wonder…

It isn’t difficult to find blessings from God; we really don’t have to look that far even in our most “down” moments. We just take a glance around us and we see how blessed we are.

But how often do we thank God that he is who he is? He is good! In every aspect of his deity, God is perfectly good. And his goodness most beautifully manifests itself in his enduring love for us.

Today we stop a moment and humbly give thanks to you, God, that you are good. Not because of your care, though you are continually watching over us. Not because of what you have given us, though we are surrounded by comfort and by provision. We thank you because you are who you are….you are good.

“I thank my God every time I remember you.

In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy…”

Phil. 1:3,4

As a parent, I don’t think there is anything more delightful than hearing someone be thankful for one of my kids.  What pleasure it must bring to God for him to hear how thankful we are for one of his other children.  Let’s take a few minutes to thank God for the people he has placed in our lives!

“Be joyful always;

pray continually;

give thanks in all circumstances,

for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

I Thess. 5:16-18

Sometimes we wonder what God’s will is for our lives?  We often aren’t sure about the next step, let alone what to do a mile down the road.  But we really desire to please God and be right in the middle of His heart for us.  Yet in one simple sentence, God has revealed to us the attitude we need as we take our baby steps toward Him in this life…joy, prayer, and thankfulness.  This week of all weeks, let’s choose to center ourselves in God’s will for our lives.

Joy!  Prayer!  Thankfulness!
