How does someone protect a heart?  Medical professionals would give us dietary guidance along with other suggestions on how to protect a heart.  While new research suggests that “that happy people are less likely to develop heart disease too,” the type of protection we are considering here is spiritual and emotional protection.

In I Timothy 6:20, Paul instructs Timothy to guard what has been entrusted to his care by turning away from “godless chatter” and opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge.

It is so easy to join with those who put down their spouses with sarcastic comments or tell jokes.  I have fallen into that trap, but also watched how that built in me a disregard and disrespect that flowed over into how I spoke to my spouse and how I treated him.

Proverbs 4:23-27  in THE MESSAGE states it this way, “Keep vigilant watch over your heart for that’s where life starts.  Don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth; avoid careless banter, white lies and gossip.  Keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions.  Watch your step, and the road will stretch out smooth before you.  Look neither right nor left; leave evil in the dust.”

Oh, Lord, help me today to find the good in others, to protect their hearts with words of encouragement.  Help me to avoid careless banter, white lies and gossip.  Show me how to build them up in the faith so that my actions and words honor and glorify you to those whose heart you have given me to protect.  Amen.
